Designing a Sharpener for better and faster Sharpening

Problem identification:
To make a design of a sharpener, which helps to sharpen your pencil faster with no effort. And thereby reducing the time.

Problem definition:
The sharpener should be able to strongly fit into the motor, which helps the sharpener to rotate and helps us to sharpen our pencil.



Design Goal and Function:

The goal of the project is to sharpen our pencil faster and thereby reducing the time and effort.

To make the sharpener work faster, we better use electric motor and a sharpener are fitted into it. And when we connect it to a battery with switch, the sharpener should rotate faster. We place the pencil in the mouth of the sharpener. This will help us to sharpen our pencil faster and with less effort.

Sufficient data:
We need to know the size of the battery, motor, switch and the sharpener before designing. The sharpness of the blade should be sufficient.

Idea creation with Sketch:
The idea is to simply sharpen our pencil with the help of a rotating sharpener. The motor handle runs smooth and fast with power from the battery.

Evaluate solution
  1. The switch should turn on/off smoothly. For that, we need a good and small switch. 
  2. The sharpener should be strongly fitted in the motor handle by providing suitable binding agent. 
  3. The battery should be large enough. 
  4. The wire connection should be correct. 
Design concepts:
The sharpener is fitted in the handle of the motor and the motor is fitted just above the battery which is quite large in size. And the switch is placed along the side of the battery.

Detail designing:
The sharpener is fitted in the handle of the motor which helps to rotate the sharpener. And the motor is fitted just above the battery which is quite large in size so that we can hold the device comfortably. And the switch is placed along the side of the battery so that user can switch it on/off easily whenever necessary.

Standardization:
  • We cannot control the rotation of the handle where the sharpener is fitted or can easily switch it on/off very fast. 
  • The complete or perfect sharpening may not be possible all the time. 

Prototype:
First, we have to insert the pencil in the sharpener and turn on the switch. The pencil gets smoothly sharpened as needed.

Testing:
For testing, we have to follow step-by-step method. Insert the pencil in the sharpener and turn on the switch. Power will be used from the battery to run the motor. The sharpener rotates with the motor handle. And we get better sharpening of our pencil.

Modifications:
To improve the design I should use minimum wire connections and better battery for holding and also use a good motor.

Freezing the design chart:
All the work is done for designing and should make the product as desired.

Cost analysis:
The battery may cost me Rs.20 and motor will be Rs.40 and for other material, it may cost around 40-50 rupees. Altogether the product cost Rs.110.

Manufacturing process:
All the components are connected correctly and they are joined using glue & tape.

Quality:
It is assured that quality of the product is good. i.e all the components are in good working condition and have a long lifespan.

Feedback analysis:

For improving the project I should collect feedback from end users. And I should use this information to improve the product.
